A friend and I were talking about holidays in October. Outside of Halloween, not much was coming to mind…when suddenly she laughed and said the World Series is a holiday – as long as the Red Sox don’t win! Clearly, she is a Yankees fan…
Rivalries are funny – it’s one thing to have a favorite, but then we often have the one we always like to root against. And when you’re a member of “Team Jesus,” Satan is always rooting against you! As much as he loves for evil to thrive, he finds equal pleasure when good falters. In 1 Peter 5:8, the Bible says he “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” I don’t know about you, but I think that goes a little beyond a friendly rivalry!
I am so glad Jesus was, and is, victorious! I John 4:4 says as children of God, we are overcomers because “greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.” When what I face in this life seems too much for me, I can hang on to this promise. No matter my rival or who is rooting against me, I have the Victorious One who is Lord of All cheering for me. Which makes every day, holiday or no, a day worth celebrating.
