Not many words can evoke such a broad range of emotions! Excitement, joy, trepidation, anxiety…the anticipation of Christmas can make us all a little crazy. And because Christians are, first and foremost human, we are not immune! We are subject to the same human frailties as everyone else. So how can we set ourselves apart during the marvelous season of Christmas?
Maybe the best way for a Christian to reflect the joy of the Christmas season is to actually be joyful! We are celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. When we celebrate Christmas, we celebrate the hope of the world. All of the gift giving, celebration, and gatherings are an expression of joy in response to this! What is more worthy of celebration?!
Along the way, try not to be surprised that the world is “worldly.” (I know, right?!) For example, there are many wonderful, well-meaning folks who get a little crazy with the use of “happy holidays” rather than “Merry Christmas.” I get it. We want to keep Christ in Christmas. However, is it realistic to think someone wishing you “happy holidays” is trying to destroy Christmas, or are they just trying to offer a cheerful salutation? Will you choose to offer them a joyful expression in return; or hit them with a sanctimonious “Merry Christmas” dripping with condemnation?
In the midst of all the hustle and bustle, what better way to spread the joy of Christmas than by being joyful! Whether or not someone wishes you “happy holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas,” keeping Christ in Christmas means being a Merry Christmas to all in a happy holiday world.
