There are a lot of inspirational and encouraging quotes to inspire us, but this is one of my all-time favorites – from Mike Tyson (I know – Mike Tyson??). He said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” Doesn’t seem that inspiring, does it? But it resonates with me in so many ways.
Even if we aren’t “planners”, we often have expectations of how we think things should go: how our boss should handle a situation, how our children should behave, where our career should take us, when we will get married, how many kids we will have, what they will become – you get the picture.
Often we are faced with the reality that our expectations aren’t going to happen … and that can feel like the punch in the face! Life has shown me that the real question may not be if this is going to happen, but when will it happen. How many times will I get punched? When will it happen? And most importantly, what will I do when it does happen?
Unfortunately, life is full of loss and disappointments – all sorts of unexpected “punches”. What can we do? Psalms 95:2 tells us … Come into His presence with thanksgiving and sing His praises. More often than I would like to admit, I have a difficult time finding things to be grateful for, and I know it’s because I stop looking for them. It is hard to see the good (or anything else!) when you just got punched in the face.
But the good is there. It might take some work, but we can find it. I write down three things everyday that I am grateful for so when the punch stings and I can’t see clearly, I can look back and be reminded of how much good there really is in my life. And be encouraged to keep looking for it.
