Patriotism is defined as “love for or devotion to one’s country.” There is no greater display of patriotism than when someone is willing to lay down his life for his country. As a mom with a son in the armed forces, I am especially grateful for the many that have made this choice. The pride I feel for the courageous choices he makes every day is mixed with love, fear, and worry.
When I reflect on my son’s service, I can’t help but be reminded of the verse in John, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” My son had the greatest example – Jesus wasn’t only willing to lay down His life – He actually did it. Jesus knew from the start that His earthly life would end on the cross. And He didn’t do it just for His friends; He did it for everyone. I realize the pride, love, heartache, and joy that I experience is a mere glimpse of what His mother must have experienced raising the Savior of Man!
When I consider the blessings we enjoy as Americans, I am reminded of how much I have to be grateful for – including my son, all who serve and protect us, and to our Ultimate Protector and Savior, Jesus.
By this we know love that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. 1 John 3:16
